Ontario EQAO results show mixed student achievement

The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) has released its latest assessment results for Ontario students, showing varied performance across different school boards and grade levels.

Ontario Minister of Education Paul Calandra noted that while students are making progress in mathematics across Grades 3, 6, and 9, achievement gaps persist and results remain uneven. The Ministry has directed school boards to review their Ontario Student Achievement Plans and has appointed an independent advisory body to recommend improvements.

Local responses to the data were mixed. The Lambton-Kent District School Board (LKDSB) reported slight short-term declines in math, reading, and writing scores for Grades 3 and 6 compared to the previous school year. However, LKDSB officials emphasized that long-term data shows steady improvement in several areas, including a 10-percentage-point increase in Grade 9 math scores over five years.

In contrast, the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board (BHNCDSB) reported strong literacy performance. The board noted that nearly 78% of Grade 3 pupils and 89% of Grade 6 pupils scored above the provincial standard in reading, with Grade 10 literacy rates also exceeding provincial averages.
