Ontario expands post-secondary capacity with 40,000 new seats

The Ontario provincial government is investing $1.7 billion to expand capacity in several high-demand post-secondary sectors. This initiative will create 40,000 new seats in college and university programs, following a previous announcement that added 30,000 spaces earlier this spring.

The expansion specifically targets sectors identified as critical to the labor market and local economies. The allocation of the new seats includes 40,200 for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), 16,100 for health care, 7,900 for education, 3,800 for trades, and 3,000 for programs addressing specific local needs.

Colleges and Universities Minister Nolan Quinn stated that the investment aims to provide young people with opportunities for rewarding careers while ensuring communities have access to highly skilled, locally trained workers. The new process requires institutions to collaborate with local communities and industries to ensure program offerings align with economic requirements. Industry leaders, including representatives from Colleges Ontario and the Council of Universities for Ontario, noted that the expansion comes at a critical time as student applications rise and industry partnerships with academic institutions continue to grow.
