Ontario family alleges wrongful death during MAiD procedure
An investigation is underway following the death of 83-year-old Brigitte Stegemann at The Pearl, a long-term care home in Cannifton, Ontario. Stegemann, who had been diagnosed with Stage IV stomach cancer, underwent a Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) procedure despite her family's claims that she had previously rejected the option due to her Christian beliefs.
Stegemann’s granddaughter, Brigitte Kranendonk, who served as her caregiver and medical power of attorney, alleges that the consent process was flawed. Kranendonk reported that during a cognitive test intended to ensure the patient was of sound mind, Stegemann was unable to answer basic questions, such as identifying which of her siblings were still living. Furthermore, the family claims they were not notified that a MAiD assessment had been scheduled.
The family has raised concerns regarding the validity of the signed consent forms, which they have not seen. Reports also indicate complications during the procedure, including a botched attempt to connect an IV.
