Ontario heat wave fuels tornado risk and migrant worker protests

Environment Canada senior climatologist David Phillips warned that heat and humidity are increasing the likelihood of tornadoes across Ontario. He noted that the province experiences more tornadoes than any other Canadian region and that the active tornado season will continue through the summer, with storms most common between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Residents are advised to monitor weather alerts and have safety plans ready.

Meanwhile, migrant farm workers gathered in Toronto to protest hazardous conditions during the extreme heat that has pushed humidex values to 48 °C and produced severe air‑quality problems. Workers reported heat strokes, lack of shade, water, and restroom facilities, and cited at least eight deaths among migrant agricultural workers this summer. Demonstrators called for reforms to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program and stronger workplace protections, urging the province to address health and safety risks during heat waves.
