Ontario invests $9.8M in new millwright training centre in Port Hope

The Ontario government is investing approximately $9.8 million to establish a new millwright training centre in Port Hope. Supported by the Skills Development Fund Capital Stream, the facility is designed to train 2,550 apprentices, journeypersons, and new entrants over the next five years.

Led by UBC Millwright Local 2309, the roughly 45,000-square-foot facility is currently under construction. It will provide both classroom and hands-on instruction in essential skills such as welding, rigging, alignment, and industrial maintenance. Trainees will also earn certifications in areas including equipment operation, confined spaces, and working at heights.

The initiative aims to strengthen Ontario’s skilled trades workforce to support the province’s energy, manufacturing, and industrial sectors. The training is expected to address labor needs related to regional projects, such as the Darlington small modular reactor refurbishment and the Wesleyville nuclear project.
