Ontario judge sentences handgun trafficker to house arrest

An Ontario judge has sentenced 29-year-old Emerson Wright to house arrest for his role in a covert scheme to traffic handguns from the United States into Canada. Wright pleaded guilty in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice to conspiracy to traffic a firearm to his childhood friend, Dylan Crawford.

Justice Kelly Tranquilli issued the sentence, noting that while the offense was grave, incarceration was not the only option. The decision followed the removal of a mandatory minimum sentence of three years for this offense, which had previously been declared unconstitutional.

Defense counsel argued for a conditional sentence of two years less a day, citing Wright’s lack of a prior record, his addiction issues, and his progress in rehabilitation. While the Crown argued for a three-year penitentiary sentence to ensure denunciation and deterrence, the court opted for restraint given Wright's status as a first-time, youthful offender with an established rehabilitation plan.
