Ontario leads Canada's regulated online gambling market growth

Ontario has become the leading province in Canada’s shift toward a regulated online gambling market. In April 2022 the province opened a fully competitive market to licensed private operators, creating a thriving environment for virtual entertainment and sports betting. By 2025 the market generated about US$72 billion in total bets, signalling rapid user adoption of the regulated platform. The open‑market model has redirected spending that previously went to offshore, unregulated sites back into the domestic economy, allowing the province to retain and tax these revenues. Licensing income is being used to finance public‑infrastructure projects, illustrating a sustainable economic model that other provinces are looking to emulate.
