Ontario municipal election nominations close for 2026 vote

The nomination deadline for the 2026 Ontario municipal elections closed on August 21, providing a clearer view of the upcoming political landscape for the October 26 vote. In Toronto, the mayoral race features a crowded field, including incumbent Olivia Chow, Brad Bradford, and Chris Alexander. Notable shifts include Dianne Saxe switching her candidacy to the Toronto-Danforth ward.

In Ottawa, the deadline also passed with several city councillors, including Riley Brockington and Laine Johnson, running unopposed. The mayoral race in Ottawa includes eight candidates, such as incumbent Mark Sutcliffe and Jeff Leiper.

Political observers, including York University professor Zachary Spicer, have noted concerns regarding the number of uncontested seats. Spicer highlighted that a lack of competition in mayoral races can negatively impact voter turnout, a trend often seen in rural communities where some seats may have no registered candidates or only a single challenger.
