Ontario municipal elections see several uncontested mayoral races

Following the municipal election nomination deadline, several regions in Ontario are preparing for upcoming local elections. In midwestern Ontario, nine head-of-council positions across Bruce, Grey, Huron, and Perth counties, as well as northern Wellington, are poised for acclamation. If municipal clerks certify these nominations by Monday afternoon, these candidates will be declared elected without a vote.

Notable uncontested candidates include Chris Peabody in Brockton, Sue Carleton in Georgian Bluffs, and Kevin Eccles in West Grey. In Huron County, Marg Anderson is the sole candidate for mayor, and Doug Hargrave is the only candidate for reeve. In North Perth, Deputy Mayor Doug Kellum is the only candidate for mayor.

In Northumberland County, the election cycle indicates significant potential for leadership changes. At least three of the seven members of the Northumberland County council are expected to be new faces. In Alnwick-Haldimand Township, the mayor is retiring, and no incumbent is running for council. In Cobourg, Mayor Lucas Cleveland faces a contested race against Deputy Mayor Nicole Beatty and Max Le Marchant. Port Hope Mayor Olena Hankivsky is also defending her seat against several challengers.
