Ontario protesters demand increased public education funding

Thousands of protesters, including unions, teachers, students, and families, gathered across Ontario to demand better funding for the public education system. Demonstrations took place at Queen’s Park in Toronto, as well as in Ottawa, London, Sudbury, and Thunder Bay.

Organizing groups, including the AEFO, highlighted several critical issues, such as a $6.5 billion funding deficit, declining per-pupil funding, and challenges regarding teacher recruitment and retention. Other concerns raised during the rallies included classroom size and complexity, school safety, and the need for improved special education and mental health support services.

In addition to K-12 concerns, student groups and academic unions, such as CUPE 3906, have expressed solidarity with movements fighting against austerity in post-secondary education. They are calling for protections against tuition increases and changes to the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) to ensure education remains accessible and affordable.
