Ontario Provincial Police warn of evolving fraud and credit card scams

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are warning residents in Eastern and Essex County about evolving fraud tactics targeting individuals and businesses. These schemes involve sophisticated impersonation techniques to steal personal information and financial assets.

In one reported incident in Lakeshore, a resident lost over $27,000 to a credit card scam. An individual posing as a bank representative claimed the victim's account was compromised and instructed them to cut their credit card in half to facilitate a chip exchange. A suspect later arrived at the residence to collect the card and provide a fraudulent replacement.

Other emerging trends include cellphone service provider fraud. Scammers pose as service representatives offering discounts or upgrades to trick victims into revealing account passwords, security codes, or sensitive identification like Social Insurance Numbers. Victims may also be manipulated into ordering expensive devices and shipping them to fraudulent addresses.
