Ontario threatens to cut electricity exports to the United States
Ontario Premier Doug Ford has revived threats to restrict electricity exports to the United States, potentially impacting 1.5 million homes and businesses in Minnesota, Michigan, and New York. This move follows escalating trade tensions after U.S. President Donald Trump announced increased tariffs, prompting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to signal a “dollar-for-dollar” retaliation starting in September.
Ford suggested that Ontario might consider surcharges on electricity or restrictions on other resources, including critical minerals, uranium, potash, and oil. He argued that providing inexpensive electricity to American companies that compete with Canadian industries is counterproductive to domestic job security.
While Ontario is a major provider, Ford noted that other provinces such as Quebec, New Brunswick, and British Columbia also export power to the U.S. The potential shift in energy trade could impact electricity affordability and reliability across the North American border.
