Ontario to implement permanent Daylight Saving Time in northwest
The Ontario government has announced plans to implement permanent Daylight Saving Time in parts of northwestern Ontario to maintain alignment with neighboring Manitoba. The regulatory change is intended to prevent economic and social disruptions for businesses, families, and Indigenous communities located in Ontario’s Central Time Zone.
Communities west of the 90th meridian, including Kenora, will remain on Daylight Saving Time rather than reverting to standard time. This decision follows engagement with municipal and First Nation leaders, which reportedly showed unanimous support for the move. By staying aligned with Manitoba, these regions avoid being an hour behind their neighbors and Thunder Bay during the winter months.
While these northwestern communities will move to permanent Daylight Saving Time, areas in the Eastern Time Zone, such as Thunder Bay, will continue to follow the standard practice of changing clocks on November 1st.
