Ontario to implement standardized truck driver training

The Ontario government is developing a new standardized entry-level training curriculum for commercial truck drivers to enhance road safety across the province. The framework, expected to be implemented by early 2027, will require all organizations offering truck driver training in Ontario to follow a consistent program.

The proposed curriculum will consist of more than 103 hours of training. Potential subjects under consideration include fatigue management, human trafficking awareness, mandatory air brake training, and driving in northern, rural, or remote areas.

This initiative follows a report from the Auditor General which indicated that the provincial government had not been effectively monitoring commercial truck driver training and licensing regimes, noting a lack of oversight and instances of corner-cutting at certain career colleges.
