Ontario weather alerts issued for heavy rain and potential flooding
Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected across parts of Ontario, prompting weather alerts in the Niagara Peninsula and Toronto.
The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) has issued a flood alert for the Niagara Peninsula, southeastern Hamilton, and eastern Haldimand County. A slow-moving weather system is forecast to bring 40 to 60 mm of rain from August 22 through August 24, with potential for higher amounts during thunderstorms. While major flooding in large watercourses is not currently anticipated, officials warn of flash flooding in urbanized areas and small watercourses.
In Toronto, Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for heavy rain, with local amounts potentially exceeding 50 mm. Meteorologists expect two rounds of thunderstorms on Saturday, with the heaviest rain occurring during the afternoon and evening. Residents are advised to avoid low-lying areas and flooded roadways.
