Ontario youth mental health distress levels decrease to 46 per cent

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) reports that psychological distress among Ontario youth has decreased since the pandemic, though levels remain high. According to the 2025 Ontario Student Drug Use and Health Survey, 46 per cent of students in grades 7 to 12 reported moderate to serious psychological distress, down from 51 per cent in 2023.

Lead investigator Hayley Hamilton noted that while the decline is encouraging, mental health struggles remain significantly higher than they were a decade ago. Potential drivers for the long-term rise include social media influence and a reduction in the stigma surrounding mental health discussions.

The survey also highlighted a sharp increase in online gambling among students. One in 10 students reported placing sports bets in 2025, a significant rise from one in 100 in 2017. This trend coincides with changes in Ontario regulations allowing private betting sites. Additionally, the data showed that fewer students are using alcohol and drugs compared to previous years, with many delaying their first use.
