Ontology resumes blockchain operations after 41-hour security halt

Ontology has resumed normal mainnet operations following a 41-hour suspension of block production. The halt, which began at approximately 16:43 UTC on October 10 and ended around 09:57 UTC on October 12, was triggered by a security warning regarding an unidentified project within the Ontology ecosystem.

The network team coordinated with a majority of consensus nodes to stop new transactions and block production as a precautionary measure to mitigate potential risks to network assets. While Ontology confirmed that its core infrastructure remains secure and no funds were lost from the network itself, the team has not yet identified the specific ecosystem project involved or the nature of the vulnerability.

During the interruption, cryptocurrency exchanges including Bitget and the South Korean exchange Coinone suspended deposits and withdrawals for assets on the Ontology network. The incident highlights the capabilities of Ontology’s Verifiable Byzantine Fault Tolerance (VBFT) consensus mechanism, which allows participating nodes to jointly halt the network in response to high-risk security threats.
