Onyx River identified as Antarctica's largest river
The Onyx River is identified as the largest river in Antarctica, spanning a length of only 32 kilometers according to data from the National Science Foundation (NSF).
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the river possesses a unique geological structure. It originates near the Lower Wright Glacier in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, begins at Lake Brownworth, flows westward through the Wright Valley, and terminates at Lake Vanda.
The river's limited length is primarily attributed to the extreme freezing climate of Antarctica. Flow is only possible during the summer months from December to February when temperatures rise enough to melt ice; for the remainder of the year, the water is completely frozen.
