Oostende authorities issue fines for littering during enforcement campaign

The city of Oostende has caught nearly one hundred people littering within a single week during a targeted enforcement campaign. Most violations involved illegal dumping at waste collection points or leaving trash in public spaces. Specifically, 72 individuals were caught dumping waste at waste streets or bins, 21 were cited for discarding cigarette butts, and three instances involved dog fouling or public urination.

These enforcement actions follow new municipal regulations implemented on October 1, which increased the maximum administrative fine (GAS-boete) for adult offenders from 350 to 500 euros. The inspections, conducted by community watches, municipal officers, and local police, also utilize surveillance cameras in high-frequency areas. Minors aged 14 and older are also subject to fines, though they are required to attend meetings and may undergo recycling training or community service with the cleaning department.
