Oostende proposes increasing maximum waste fines to 500 euros

The city of Oostende is proposing a new public cleanliness ordinance that would increase the maximum GAS fine for waste-related offenses from 350 to 500 euros. Mayor John Crombez presented the proposal to the city council to strengthen the city’s waste policy, address illegal dumping, and regulate commercial waste.

To increase the likelihood of enforcement, the city plans to deploy additional controls at waste collection points, utilize surveillance cameras at known dumping hotspots, and conduct daily cleanliness rounds. The ordinance also covers offenses such as improper disposal of cigarette butts, urinating in public, and failing to manage pet waste. For offenders aged 14 and older, the city may mandate recycling training or community service with cleaning departments.
