Oostende redevelopment project proposed for Stroombanklaan site
A major redevelopment project is proposed for the commercial site on Stroombanklaan in the Vuurtorenwijk district of Oostende, Belgium. The project, spearheaded by real estate company Distimmo, aims to replace the existing supermarket and its parking lot with a mixed-use development.
According to preliminary designs by architectural firm DRIE, the supermarket would be relocated above the parking area. This reconfiguration would free up ground-level space to create a traffic-free green public square. The proposed development is intended to include shops, residences, offices, and hospitality services, alongside smaller amenities such as a pharmacy, a laundromat, a cafeteria, and a daycare center.
The project also emphasizes environmental integration, with plans to de-pave parts of the public domain to allow for greenery and rainwater absorption. The Oostende city council is scheduled to decide on the matter of roads and the layout of the surrounding public domain on Monday, October 26.
