Oosterscheldekering marks 40 years of flood protection in the Netherlands
The Oosterscheldekering, the world's largest storm surge barrier, marks its 40th anniversary of official use. On October 4, 1986, Queen Beatrix formally inaugurated the structure, declaring, “The storm surge barrier in the Oosterschelde is closed. The Delta Works are completed. Zeeland is safe.”
The 9-kilometer-long barrier between Schouwen-Duiveland and Noord-Beveland consists of 65 pillars and 62 sliding gates. To balance environmental concerns, only 17 of the 62 steel gates are closed during extreme high water events. The original opening ceremony was attended by representatives from 35 countries, including members of various European royal families and international dignitaries.
To commemorate the milestone, the Watersnoodmuseum hosted educational activities, including workshops where children learned about construction techniques like building 'zinkstukken' (sinking platforms). The museum also held events for those with personal memories of the barrier's construction, featuring historical photographs, models, and commemorative items.
