Opatija officials meet with children to discuss traffic safety

In Opatija, members of the Children's City Council met with local officials to discuss road safety and the protection of minors in traffic. The meeting included the Croatian Ombudsman for Children, Tatjana Katkić Stanić, Mayor Fernando Kirigin, and the Chief of the Opatija Police Station, Tomislav Milković.

Children presented observations regarding unsafe pedestrian paths, speeding, inadequate sidewalk widths, poorly marked crossings, and vehicles parking on sidewalks. To address these concerns, the police announced an increased presence near primary schools as part of the ‘Respect Our Signs’ campaign.

Ombudsman Katkić Stanić noted that 60% of children involved in traffic accidents were passengers in vehicles driven by family members. She also highlighted the rising danger posed by electric scooters, noting that in approximately 138 out of 500 traffic accidents involving scooters in Croatia, the riders were minors.
