OPATRA London managers arrested amid Hong Kong hard-sell scandal
Hong Kong Customs has arrested two managers, a 42-year-old male financial manager and a 25-year-old female administrative manager, following allegations of aggressive hard-selling tactics at OPATRA London beauty stores. The arrests follow at least six reports to Customs involving amounts ranging from HK$1,800 to HK$10,000, with one recent report involving over HK$100,000.
The controversy was ignited by viral videos and personal accounts of consumers being pressured into high-value purchases. One victim, a 72-year-old woman, reported being steered into a Yuen Long branch where she was pressured into spending approximately HK$30,000. Another video showed a woman weeping outside a Sha Tin location after allegedly being coerced into spending over HK$60,000.
Following the outcry, branches in Sha Tin and Yuen Long have ceased operations. The UK-based headquarters of OPATRA London issued a statement distancing itself from the Hong Kong operations, clarifying that the local stores are independently owned and operated by a local company under a distribution agreement. The headquarters stated that the arrested individuals are not direct employees of the UK parent company and expressed regret over the situation while pledging to cooperate with authorities.
