Opava railway bridge demolition begins following flood damage
Demolition has begun on a railway bridge between Opava and Malé Hoštice that was destroyed by flooding. Construction crews are currently removing metal components and crushing concrete structures to clear the site.
Work is expected to continue for two months to level the terrain and complete site preparations. The next major phase, the construction of a new 400-meter viaduct, is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027. This new structure will be built approximately one meter higher than the original and will utilize deep-seated large-diameter piles due to its location in a flood zone.
The total project cost is estimated at 496 million CZK. Following the completion of the viaduct, which is expected to take about one year, trial rail operations are projected to commence in the first half of 2028.
