OPay denies viral rumors of September operational shutdown

Fintech company OPay has officially debunked viral social media rumors claiming the platform would suspend operations indefinitely starting September 1, 2026. The fraudulent notices, which circulated widely on platforms like X, falsely advised customers to withdraw their funds immediately to avoid service disruptions.

OPay identified several red flags in the fake announcements, including the use of an outdated logo, incorrect spelling of the brand name as ‘Opay’, and a non-standard communication template. The company emphasized that its services remain fully operational and that there are no plans for a shutdown.

In response to the misinformation, OPay threatened legal action against an X user, identified as Cute Hafserh, for disseminating the false claims. Following a formal warning from the company’s legal counsel, the user deleted the post and issued an apology, admitting the information was misleading. OPay has urged the public to verify all financial news through its official, verified communication channels to prevent unnecessary panic.
