OPay seeks police and DSS investigation into shutdown rumors

OPay Digital Services Limited has initiated legal and investigative actions following social media rumors alleging the fintech company is facing an indefinite shutdown. The company has requested that the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police launch investigations into the circulation of this information, which OPay claims is capable of disrupting the Nigerian financial system and causing financial losses.

OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Rokosu, stated during a press conference in Lagos that the company is cooperating with law enforcement and has provided evidence to identify those responsible for spreading the rumors. The company maintains that it remains fully operational in Nigeria.

In addition to involving security agencies, OPay has issued legal threats against specific parties, including social commentator Adamu B. Garba II and ViralGrabTVNG. The company demanded that these parties delete the publications, issue retractions, and apologize, describing the claims as false, malicious, and defamatory.
