Global oil supply rises as OPEC+ and Gulf producers boost output
Global oil markets are experiencing significant shifts in supply and demand. According to the International Energy Agency, global oil production rose to 102.3 million barrels per day in September, a 2.5 million barrel per day increase from August. This growth was largely driven by recovering output from Gulf producers, including the United Arab Emirates, which saw production reach record levels.
OPEC reported that its total output reached approximately 25.1 million barrels per day in September, while the broader OPEC+ alliance saw output increase by about 903,000 barrels per day. Saudi Arabia contributed significantly to these increases. Looking ahead, OPEC raised its 2027 global oil demand growth forecast to 2.55 million barrels per day, though it lowered its 2026 outlook.
In the United States, crude inventories have shown volatility. The Energy Information Administration reported a surprise 3.2 million barrel decline in inventories for the week ending October 2, driven by surging exports and increased refinery activity. However, the American Petroleum Institute estimated a much larger drop of 11.12 million barrels for the week ending October 9.
Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to impact the market. Kpler reports that the ongoing conflict has caused cumulative production outages exceeding 2 billion barrels, with approximately 5 million barrels per day still offline, largely due to disruptions in Iran.
