OPEC Secretary General visits Algeria to mark Algiers Accord anniversary

OPEC Secretary General Haitham Al Ghais is conducting a working visit to Algeria from September 26 to 29. The visit coincides with the tenth anniversary of the 2016 Algiers Accord, a landmark agreement that helped bridge differences between major producers and laid the foundation for the OPEC+ cooperation mechanism.

During the visit, Al Ghais met with Algerian officials, including Minister of Energy and Hydrocarbons Mohamed Arkab and the CEO of Sonatrach. Discussions focused on global oil market developments, production coordination, and the importance of maintaining market stability.

Beyond traditional hydrocarbons, the meetings also addressed the energy transition. Officials discussed the complementary roles of oil and gas alongside renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, noting that while renewables are expected to grow in the global energy mix by 2050, hydrocarbons will remain a primary resource.
