Opel becomes most targeted car brand for thieves in Hungary

Data from the first half of 2026 released by the National Police Headquarters shows a shift in vehicle theft trends in Hungary. Opel has become the most targeted car brand, with 32 vehicles listed as wanted, overtaking the previous leader, Suzuki, which saw 28 cases.

Volkswagen follows in third place with 23 reported thefts. Notably, Skoda has entered the top list with 11 cases, despite not appearing in the top ten during the previous year. Other frequently targeted brands include Ford (13), BMW (12), and Toyota (12). While luxury vehicles are occasionally seized by police, statistics indicate that thieves primarily target common, high-volume models.

In terms of geography, Budapest remains the most affected area, accounting for approximately 31 percent of passenger car thefts. Among other regions, Kecskemét, Győr, Eger, Esztergom, and Gödöllő reported higher frequencies of vehicle thefts. In the motorcycle category, the Simson brand has returned to the top of the list with 17 cases, followed by Honda with 15.
