Opel Manta wreck from the Danube attracts visitors in Neu-Ulm

An Opel Manta, believed to have been submerged in the Danube for over 50 years, has become a local attraction in Neu-Ulm, Germany. The vehicle, likely a yellow Manta A from around 1970, was discovered by an angler in Elchingen in late May at a depth of approximately five meters.

Following the discovery, a recovery operation involving over 50 emergency personnel, including divers and technical relief services, took seven hours to lift the car from the river. The vehicle is currently being displayed at the Oldtimerfabrik in Neu-Ulm in a heavily weathered state, characterized by rust, mud, and a demolished roof.

Managing director Peter Wirsching noted that the wreck attracts between 50 and 100 visitors daily. While the car is too damaged to sit in, it remains a point of fascination for the public. The vehicle's presence has even led to incidents where visitors slashed the tires in a misguided search for gold.
