Opel Rekord C Celebrates 60 Years Since 1966 Launch

In August 1966 Opel unveiled the Rekord C, the third generation of its mid‑size family, completely redesigning the model line. The car was offered in a wide range of body styles – two‑ and four‑door sedans, three‑ and five‑door wagons, a van, and later a fastback coupé that became the flagship. Technical innovations included front disc brakes, a double‑circuit brake system, rear coil springs with a Panhard bar and double wishbones, and a servofront brake, features rare for its class at the time.

The Rekord C spawned sporty versions such as the 1967 Sprint and the clandestine “Black Widow” Group 5 race car of 1968. Production ended in December 1971 after more than 1.25 million units were built, making it the first Opel to exceed a million sales and cementing its place in German pop culture, even appearing on album covers. The model’s 60th anniversary is being commemorated in 2026.
