Open Art biennial in Örebro faces criticism amid art institution campaign

The Open Art biennial in Örebro is facing intense criticism, with individual artworks and artists being openly targeted. This backlash has led to questions regarding the municipality's financial contributions to the exhibition, sparking debates about threats to democracy, freedom of expression, and local business.

In a separate movement within the Swedish art sector, over 30 small and medium-sized art institutions have launched a campaign titled “Asbra, fattar noll” (Terrible, understand zero). The initiative encourages the public to engage with contemporary art that may be perceived as difficult or incomprehensible. Participants, including Alexandra Magnusson from the Skövde Art Museum, aim to demonstrate to policymakers that the incomprehensible nature of certain works is a creative asset rather than a problem.
