Open Compute Project adopts new power metric as Supermicro expands AI infrastructure

The Open Compute Project (OCP) has accepted a new whitepaper from Airsys introducing ‘Power Compute Effectiveness’ (PCE). This metric is designed to help data center designers determine how much provisioned electrical capacity is actually available for IT compute before construction begins. Unlike Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), which measures operational energy efficiency, PCE assesses capacity allocation at the design stage by accounting for cooling, electrical losses, and auxiliary loads.

In a related development, Super Micro Computer, Inc. has expanded its portfolio of OCP-accepted systems. The company is offering integrated rack-scale solutions, including AI/HPC systems, 48V DC power, and liquid cooling, to support higher-density compute requirements. These solutions aim to simplify the deployment of AI infrastructure and reduce time-to-online for data center operators.
