Open sewage in Recife streets drives away customers and sparks complaints

In the São José neighbourhood of central Recife, a continuous flow of open sewage has created foul odours and dark water pools along Padre Muniz Street. Local shop owners say the condition has deterred patrons and hurt sales. Restaurant owner Ademir Pereira described the problem as a leaking drainage cover that floods the street, while merchant Fernando Lins warned that the situation poses a public‑health risk, saying, “É uma questão de saúde pública, podendo ter mosquito e outras questões.”

Separately, a resident of São Paulo, Marcelo Oliva, lodged a complaint with Sabesp after a sewer blockage at his home, claiming the external inspection box was sealed and prevented repairs. Sabesp reported the blockage was cleared within 24 hours but advised Oliva to open the box for further work. Both incidents highlight ongoing sanitation challenges in Brazilian cities.
