Open-source developers introduce new desktop GUI frameworks
Developers are advancing open-source options for building desktop applications using modern programming languages.
Druid is a work-in-progress, data-oriented UI design toolkit written in Rust. It allows developers to build desktop applications for macOS, Windows, and Linux by controlling individual pixels through its 2D graphics library, Piet. The framework utilizes a trait-based system where new widgets are created by implementing specific functions such as paint, layout, and event handling.
Pyzed is a new open-source framework designed to provide native desktop GUIs for Python developers. It combines the ease of Python with the performance of Iced, a GUI toolkit written in Rust. Pyzed follows the Elm architecture, where Python manages the application state and view, while Rust handles the layout and GPU-accelerated rendering. The framework is available via PyPI and supports Windows, macOS, and Linux across both x86-64 and ARM architectures.
