Open-source projects use AI to remove smart TV ads and bloatware
A wave of open-source projects, including ‘Free My TV’, ‘Cleanyourtv’, ‘tv-detox’, and ‘dumbtvall’, is gaining popularity as users seek to remove intrusive advertisements, sponsored content, and data tracking from smart televisions.
These projects primarily target devices running Android and Google TV operating systems, such as those from TCL, Hisense, Sony, and older Amazon Fire products. By utilizing existing developer modes and the Android Debug Bridge (ADB), these tools allow users to debloat their devices and install customized, minimalist home screens without requiring root access or permanent firmware hacking. The changes are designed to be reversible.
Many of these customizations are being developed through ‘vibe coding’—using AI coding agents like Claude Code to assist in reverse-engineering interfaces and building new launchers. Reported benefits include significantly lower RAM usage, faster interface speeds, and the removal of autoplaying promotions and unnecessary background services.
