Open TV channel faces political reporting shortages ahead of new season

The Greek television channel Open is preparing for its new season with only one confirmed new hire, presenter Katérina Zarífi. Rumors have mentioned possible contributors such as Pano Sombolos and Naso Gumenidi, but no agreements have been announced.

The channel’s biggest challenge is a shortage of seasoned political journalists during an election year. Owner Ivan Savvidis is currently working with his close associates Christos Panagiotopoulos and Andreas Papamimiko, yet the newsroom lacks experienced reporters with high credibility. Young reporters report daily frustration, being asked to cover political stories while also covering for presenters on holiday, with low pay and little career prospect. Consequently, many are seeking work elsewhere, and dozens of editors and presenters have left Open in recent years.

The situation highlights concerns about the quality of political reporting on the channel as it aims to attract audiences for the upcoming season.
