OpenAI acquires Glass Imaging for over $300 million

OpenAI has reportedly acquired Glass Imaging, a California-based startup specializing in AI-driven smartphone camera technology, for more than $300 million. The acquisition, which was not officially confirmed by either party, represents a significant increase from the startup’s $100 million valuation last year.

Glass Imaging was founded in 2019 by former Apple engineers Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, who previously worked on technologies such as iPhone Portrait Mode. The company’s GlassAI technology uses neural networks to process images at the moment of capture, aiming to overcome the physical limitations of smartphone sensors to produce image quality comparable to DSLR cameras.

This move aligns with OpenAI’s expanding ambitions in consumer hardware. The company is reportedly collaborating with former Apple designer Jony Ive on new AI-centric devices.

Separately, OpenAI is in early-stage discussions regarding a new funding round that could value the company at approximately $1.2 trillion. CEO Sam Altman has indicated that while an initial public offering is planned, it is unlikely to occur before 2027.
