OpenAI advances mathematics while Microsoft exits UK data centre deal

OpenAI has released over 700 manuscripts generated by an unreleased model, claiming solutions to hundreds of open problems in fields such as algebra, logic, and number theory. The company reported that each result required an average of three hours of machine thinking. This follows a previous announcement regarding a proposed solution to the Navier–Stokes problem, one of the Millennium Prize Problems. The rapid progress has caused significant tension within the mathematical community, leading some associations to advise members to cease collaboration with OpenAI and sparking disputes over intellectual credit.

In the United Kingdom, a major infrastructure project intended to bolster AI capabilities has stalled. Microsoft has withdrawn from an agreement to be the anchor tenant for a £2 billion data centre in Loughton, Essex, operated by the British company Nscale. The project, which was intended to house 23,000 Nvidia chips with an initial 50-megawatt capacity, was previously highlighted as part of a significant investment package between the British and American governments.
