Robotics industry nears breakthrough as leaders prepare for fleet deployment
The robotics and automation industry is approaching a major inflection point. Research from Intel indicates that 60% of senior leaders expect their organizations to operate robot fleets within the next five years. However, a significant readiness gap exists: only 40% of organizations currently have a formal strategy in place to manage a mixed human-robot workforce.
Prosus, an investment group chaired by Koos Bekker, predicts the industry will reach a “GPT-3 moment” within approximately one year, where robotic models become reliable enough for defined workplace tasks. The company estimates that useful general-purpose robots could cost around $20,000 within a few years, potentially making them economically viable for broad global use. Prosus also noted that robot reliability for narrow tasks has already risen from 65% in 2023 to as much as 99.9%.
Parallel to these physical advancements, the cybersecurity landscape is being fundamentally reshaped by artificial intelligence. Security leaders are facing a dual-front challenge: defending against AI-driven attacks—such as highly convincing phishing and automated reconnaissance—while managing the internal risks of employees using unmanaged generative AI tools. Experts suggest that traditional, static security models are becoming insufficient, necessitating a shift toward more adaptive, risk-first strategies and the potential rebuilding of Security Operations Centres (SOCs) to handle the increased scale and speed of AI-enabled threats.
