OpenAI and AARP launch AI training for seniors to combat fraud

OpenAI, AARP, and Senior Planet have launched the Older Adults AI Skills Jam, a nationwide initiative providing free, in-person ChatGPT training to help seniors navigate artificial intelligence safely. The program is being held across 10 U.S. communities, including San Antonio, Denver, Miami, Nashville, and Boise, with a goal of reaching 1,000 older adults.

The workshops focus on practical digital literacy, teaching participants how to use AI for daily tasks—such as household troubleshooting or creative projects—while emphasizing scam prevention. Participants learn to use ChatGPT to scrutinize suspicious emails, texts, and websites by identifying warning signs like urgent language and suspicious links.

The initiative addresses a significant rise in elder fraud. According to the FBI, reported losses from individuals aged 60 and over reached $7.748 billion in 2025, a 59% increase from the previous year. OpenAI has indicated plans to expand this outreach via a mobile center to reach more urban and rural communities by 2027.
