Anthropic targets $2 trillion IPO as OpenAI rules out 2026 listing

Anthropic is preparing for a major initial public offering (IPO) on the Nasdaq, with market speculation suggesting a valuation exceeding $2 trillion. The company filed a confidential Form S-1 with the SEC on June 1, 2026. Anthropic has seen rapid growth, with an annualized revenue run rate surpassing $65 billion by the end of July, driven by enterprise adoption of its Claude AI models. However, the company faces significant costs, with reported losses reaching nearly $42 billion in 2025 due to the expenses of training frontier models.

In contrast to Anthropic's push toward public markets, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has ruled out an IPO for 2026. Altman cited the need to prioritize AI safety and the complexities of the company's current governance structure, stating that the company must be able to make decisions that may not align with immediate shareholder interests to fulfill its mission.

Both companies are navigating the immense capital requirements of the AI era. Amazon has committed to investing up to $33 billion in Anthropic, while Anthropic has pledged to spend over $100 billion on AWS technologies over the next decade. Meanwhile, leaders from both firms, including Dario Amodei and Sam Altman, have recently expressed a shared concern regarding the rapid pace of AI development, calling for a more measured approach to ensure safety.
