OpenAI and Italy’s INGV Launch New Research Data Platforms

The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) and the national academic network GARR have begun a high‑speed infrastructure project that unifies data‑centers, scientific archives and monitoring stations across Italy. An autonomous system (AS200375) now routes a 10 Gbps link for the Rome hub, with a second redundant fibre line and plans to extend similar capacity nationwide, building on PNRR‑funded fibre upgrades that deliver up to 100 Gbps in the South, Abruzzo and Sardinia.

OpenAI announced a $250 million “ChatGPT for Academic Researchers” programme that will provide free access to its latest models, including the GPT‑5 family, to up to 100 000 scholars, mathematicians and engineers worldwide by 2027. The initiative includes dedicated environments with enterprise‑grade security and a policy that research data entered by participants will not be used for model training, aiming to accelerate discovery in fields such as genomics, protein modelling and complex data analysis.
