OpenAI and Sam Altman face 30 lawsuits over Tumbler Ridge shooting
The Edelson law firm has filed 30 new lawsuits in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman. The legal actions follow a fatal mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, Canada, that occurred in February.
Plaintiffs, including students and teachers from Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, allege that ChatGPT played a role in the shooting and that OpenAI could have prevented the tragedy. The lawsuits claim that OpenAI had intelligence regarding the suspect, Jesse Van Rootselaar, prior to the event. Reports indicate that OpenAI shut down a ChatGPT account allegedly linked to Van Rootselaar in June 2025 after detecting a policy violation, but the company did not alert authorities until after the shooting had taken place.
During the incident, the 18-year-old suspect killed two family members at their home before attacking the high school, where he killed five children and an education assistant. The shooting is noted as one of the deadliest mass shootings in Canadian history.
