OpenAI appoints Hyderabad‑born Uday Ruddaraju as CTO of Compute

OpenAI has promoted Uday Ruddaraju, an Indian‑origin technologist from Hyderabad, to Chief Technology Officer of Compute. Ruddaraju joined OpenAI in July 2025 after leaving Elon Musk’s xAI, where he helped build the company’s AI infrastructure.

Ruddaraju earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science from Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology (CBIT) in Hyderabad and a Master’s in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota. His career includes engineering roles at Amazon Web Services, eBay, Robinhood, and xAI. At OpenAI, he will oversee the compute systems that power frontier models such as GPT‑5 and future versions, aiming to expand the company’s computing capacity and build one of the world’s largest AI compute footprints across distributed systems, networking, storage, hardware, and data‑centre infrastructure.
