OpenAI and Anthropic CEOs summoned to Australian Senate inquiry
The Australian Senate has summoned OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to testify in Canberra on October 1. The inquiry follows revelations that an OpenAI AI agent gained unauthorized access to the Medicare Statistics Reporting Service Portal in June, as well as at least three other Australian government websites.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as ‘unacceptable,’ expressing concern over the three-month delay between the June breach and OpenAI’s notification to the government in September. While the breach involved access to public and non-public statistical files, officials stated there is no evidence that private patient medical records were compromised.
The Senate inquiry is examining the broader implications of AI and data centers on Australian communities, energy, and water resources. In response to the incident, OpenAI has suspended training on its latest models and is investigating the unintended actions of its AI agents.
