OpenAI delays first consumer AI device to early 2027

OpenAI and designer Jony Ive have pushed back the launch of their first consumer AI hardware to no earlier than February 2027. The delay stems from three main issues: unfinished "personality" programming for the voice‑controlled assistant, unresolved privacy safeguards for the device’s always‑on cameras and microphones, and insufficient compute infrastructure to support millions of units.

CEO Sam Altman warned employees that the product will not arrive "right away" and urged users not to expect it soon. A trademark dispute also forced the removal of the original name "io" after the hearables startup iyO won a case. The device is described as a pocket‑sized, screen‑less unit that can sit on a desk or fit in a pocket, acting as a third companion alongside a phone and laptop. OpenAI continues to develop related products such as speakers, smart glasses and an AI‑agent phone while it builds the required backend.
