OpenAI develops AI-driven smartphone to replace app-based interfaces

OpenAI is reportedly accelerating plans to develop its own smartphone, with mass production potentially beginning in the first half of 2027. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the device aims to move beyond the traditional app-based interface used by current smartphones.

Instead of users manually navigating through various applications to complete tasks—such as booking flights or ordering food—the device would utilize AI agents. These agents would function through a continuous, contextual interface, allowing users to execute complex requests through direct commands. The goal is for the AI to act as a central agent that performs necessary steps across services on behalf of the user.
