OpenAI donates $5 million to Simons Foundation amid plagiarism allegations

OpenAI has announced a $5 million donation to the Simons Foundation to support mathematicians in examining and understanding artificial intelligence findings. This decision follows backlash from the scientific community after the Association for Human Mathematics (AHM) accused the company of plagiarism.

The controversy stems from OpenAI’s September announcement that a new AI model had solved a key aspect of the Navier-Stokes equations, a mathematical puzzle that has challenged scientists for nearly a century. However, reports indicated that two mathematicians, including Lev Alponge of Anthropic, were already close to reaching the same conclusion through independent research. While OpenAI denies using existing work, the AHM criticized the company for ignoring scientific norms.

OpenAI stated the contribution aims to help the mathematics community turn AI progress into deeper human understanding and meaningful discoveries.
